In traffic environments, there can be an intense interaction between drivers and other road users. In a Volvo truck, the driver has access to a range of support systems to help avoid accidents and protect all road users.
Pilot Assist, enabled by Volvo Dynamic Steering, uses the camera to read lane markings and provides drivers with continuous active steering support to keep course and stay in lane. This results in more proactive support, designed for a safer and more relaxed drive. The system requires the driver to keep hands on the steering wheel.
If the truck deviates from the lane, Volvo Dynamic Steering with Lane Keeping Assist is designed to alert the driver and provide steering assistance to guide the truck towards the center of the lane.
Volvo Dynamic Steering with Stability Assist is designed to detect if the truck starts to skid. It then immediately counter steers the truck to stabilize the vehicle combination and avert the situation.
Adaptive cruise control adjusts the speed to maintain a safe distance to the vehicle ahead by automatically accelerating and braking. It works all the way from cruising at full speed down to a full stop – and then automatically starts again when the traffic gets moving. Adding both comfort and safety to highway driving.
Keeping the right speed is key to driving safely. Intelligent Speed Assist informs the driver about the speed limit for the specific vehicle combination on the current section of the road. If exceeding the limit, the driver will be alerted.
For safe driving, you need to be alert and in good shape to drive. Driver Alert Support detects signs of drowsy or inattentive driving. If signs are detected, the driver is alerted and advised to take a break.
Collision Warning with Emergency Brake is designed to detect vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians ahead as well as cyclists and pedestrians moving in the same direction as the truck. When a risk of collision is detected, the system alerts the driver. If the driver doesn’t take action while the risk remains, the truck automatically brakes to avoid a collision.
To avoid overheating the wheel brakes when going downhill, downhill cruise control helps the driver to limit the vehicle speed under the set speed. It uses the auxiliary brake together with an optimized gear selection, only using the wheel brakes when needed.
Driving downhill with a trailer on a slippery surface could result in the trailer pushing the truck and causing a jackknife effect, increasing the risk of an accident. Stretch brake can help prevent that by applying braking pulses to the trailer, which stretches out the vehicle combination to improve road safety.
Adaptive high beam is engineered to detect other vehicles in front of the truck, enabling driving in dark conditions with the high beam on when it would otherwise be unsuitable. The feature changes the light beam dynamically to provide optimized illumination without disturbing drivers of other vehicles.
Electronic Stability Control is designed to minimize the risk of skidding and rolling over. When the system detects a critical situation, it reduces engine power and applies the brakes to each wheel individually.
Tires in good shape are a good start for driving safely. Tire Pressure Monitoring System keeps track of the pressure in every tire of the vehicle combination – and alerts about low air pressure, fast leakage or high temperature. It provides extra protection against accidents caused by blown tires.
At standstill and speeds up to 10 km/h, Front Short Range Assist uses the front radar and camera to detect and alert the driver about road users in the risk area in front of the truck. If the system detects a road user in front of the truck, the driver will be informed. Should the risk for a collision increase, there will also be an audible warning.
Our Side Collision Avoidance Support uses radar sensors to detect pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles – on both sides of the truck. The driver gets a light signal when a road user is detected. Should the driver activate the turning indicator, the system warns with a flashing light, sound and active steering guidance.
Pedestrians and cyclists can be hard to detect when close to the truck. Door Opening Warning uses radar sensors to scan both sides of the truck to detect and warn of other road users in the risk areas, when opening any of the cab doors. The system warns up to two minutes after the ignition has been switched off.
Pedestrians and cyclists can get close to trucks in a city environment and can be difficult for drivers to see. The passenger corner camera gives an excellent view of the areas on the passenger side. It's automatically triggered by the turning indicator and the camera view is shown in the side display.
The rear camera offers an excellent field of view behind the truck, giving the driver more control over the surroundings. It's automatically activated when the reverse gear is engaged, and the camera view is presented in the side display.
Our electric trucks are nearly silent. This is good for the driver's working environment as well as the city environment, but it also makes electric trucks harder to notice. Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System generates subtle but noticeable sounds to make people close to the trucks aware. Designed to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
Driving safely with frequent stops and starts can be a challenge. Auto Hold is designed to make stop and go driving safer and more convenient, automatically applying the brakes to hold the truck in position until the driver pushes the accelerator. It works in forward and reverse – uphill, downhill and on flat surfaces.
Good traction is necessary to drive safely and avoid skidding. Active Grip Control is designed to control wheel spin to improve stability, acceleration and braking in slippery conditions. The system activates instantly when it detects signs of skidding.
