Volvo Trucks’ vehicles are powered by either electricity, gas or diesel. For the majority of our truck models, customers have the option to choose the energy that suits them best. Our diesel-powered and gas-powered engines are designed to deliver high performance and efficiency, while enduring tough operating conditions with a minimum of maintenance year after year. The motors in our electric trucks are made for efficient and reliable operation over a long lifespan.
All our diesel engines, except for the smallest Volvo FL engine, build on the same inline six-cylinder concept. It allows us to drive our engine evolution in steps. Every improvement made on one engine teaches us how to improve the next.
Volvo diesel engines are known for delivering a high torque level at low engine speeds. This means you’ll be able to climb uphill in high gears and save fuel.
The torque in Volvo Trucks’ gas-powered engines is comparable to that of the diesel engines and the difference is hardly noticeable, thanks to I-Shift. Gas power can be perceived a bit softer and quieter.
Electric trucks are different. Our electric motor produces its maximum torque level from zero, meaning there’s practically no time needed for torque to build up. The power is there instantly and the operation is quiet.
If you need to operate long haul routes without filling up before returning home, diesel fuels are hard to beat while gas power offers up to 1000 km range and electric trucks need recharging more often.
The inline six is an engine concept that provides a durable engine with a high output. There’s more bearing area for the crankshaft to withstand the stress, better possibilities for keeping the right operating temperature and optimized performance in hot conditions.
The Volvo FH16 Aero and Volvo FH16 are available with the D17 engine with up to 780 hp. This means that the trucks can manage the heaviest and most demanding transport assignments.
The D17 is available with either 600 hp, 700 hp or 780 hp output levels making the Volvo FH16 Aero and the Volvo FH16 the most powerful Volvo trucks. The top of the range model offers up to 3800 Nm of torque, which facilitates pulling extreme loads efficiently with excellent control over your vehicle combination.
